horrific crash on the Bluegrass Parkway in Anderson County killed teenager
A horrific crash on the Bluegrass Parkway in Anderson County, ended with one teenager dead and three others with serious injuries. The wreck was so bad it blocked traffic near mile marker 51 for hours and left hundreds of people in disbelief.
"I was just so, so, so terrified and so scared that I couldn't even function," said Lillie O'neal who witnessed the accident. It's a crash so shocking, the people who saw it happen, still can't believe it themselves.
"I was just wondering if he was OK. If he was dead or alive and I just started crying," said O'neal. She said she just got her license herself. She and a friend were driving behind the pickup that crashed. She said they were the first to see it suddenly veer over, and slam into the parked semi on the shoulder of the highway.
"I just see the guy in front of us in the pickup truck just turn really hard right and just smashed right into the semi truck," said O'neal.
There were four teenage boys inside the pickup. One was killed on impact, and the other three had serious injuries. Thankfully though, the young men weren't alone.
"I just stopped and prayed that they would be OK," said Sandra Settles. She pulled up to the scene right after the accident, and said the drivers on the highway were the first to come to the rescue.
"There were a lot of men that were trying to help because they thought the vehicle was going to burn up, a lot of good men," said Settles.
Witnesses said they were able to pull two of the teens out of the pickup. Onlookers watched as drivers cut one victim's seat belt, and used a crowbar to pry into the truck.
"We have a lot of humanity here in Kentucky... It shows when you're not scared to go up and try to help someone," said Settles. The help was needed.
One victim was air lifted to University of Kentucky Hospital, and the other two were taken by an ambulance.
Now the people who watched, waited and helped with the rescue are hoping for the best. "You just wish them well and back to health and just pray that they are OK," said Settles.
Kentucky State Police said the driver of the semi was also taken to the hospital and checked out as a precaution.
