Canton, OH : Man going wrong way on Route 30 killed in head-on crash early Thursday morning, February 2, 2017
A man heading east in a westbound lane of U.S. 30 was killed early Thursday morning when he struck a tractor-trailer head-on, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers say.
Troopers with the Ohio Highway Patrol's Canton post say alcohol was suspected in the crash that killed Justin M. Jewell, 32, of Canton, according to Lt. Leo Shirkey.
Jewell was pronounced dead at the scene by Rick Walters, investigator with the Stark County Coroner's Office.
Troopers believe Jewell was driving a red 2007 Chrysler Town & Country east in the westbound lanes of U.S. 30 at 1:29 a.m. Thursday when he struck a westbound white 2016 International 4300 head-on.
A 58-year-old Navarre man, who was driving the truck when he was struck just east of Harrison Avenue SW, suffered "non-incapacitating injuries," Shirkey said in a news release. The truck driver was taken to Aultman Hospital by Canton Fire Department medics. Shirkey said the crash occurred in the left-most lane of westbound traffic.
Shirkey said that neither man was wearing a safety belt when the collision occurred.
Shirkey said the crash remained under investigation.
