Gadsden, AL : DeKalb deputy’s fatal crash on Tuesday, October, 31st 2017
Alabama State Troopers say the wreck which claimed the life of a DeKalb County deputy occurred at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, 2 miles west of Fort Payne on County Road 27.
Daniel Lee Mathews, 56, of Fort Payne, had been a deputy with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office for four years and served as a reserve deputy two years before. He also worked with the Fort Payne Housing Authority.
“Our hearts here at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office are saddened this morning ... I have worked with Daniel for many years,” DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in a press release earlier this week. “He was a good person and deputy. We are deeply saddened to have lost one of our deputies. It is hard for us because we are like family here at the sheriff’s office. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
According to a press release from the state troopers, Mathews was driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler that left the roadway, struck a guardrail and overturned. Mathews, who was not using a seat belt, was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
