Ogden, UT : Garland man in critical condition after crashing his car into a Box Elder County elementary school on Sunday, March 13, 2016

A Garland man was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday after crashing his car into a Box Elder County elementary school, police say.

Police went looking for 52-year-old Joel Weyant at his home about 5:30 a.m. Sunday after a 911 call from a woman who said she had seen her ex-husband slash her tires outside the home where she now lives, Garland Police Chief Chad Soffe said.

Officers were in Weyant's driveway, on 200 West, when he sped by at a high rate of speed. Police followed and found Weyant's car had jumped a curb and crashed through a fence before plowing to the side of Garland Elementary School, the chief said.

Police believe Weyant may have been traveling at speeds between 60 and 70 mph before striking the building, although all four of his tires were flat after hitting the curb.

Weyant was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious head trauma in the collision, Soffe said, adding that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Soffee was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, but was later flown to McKay-Dee hospital by medical helicopter.

Weyant had been arrested for breaking a window and other acts of vandalism at his wife's home a few weeks ago and had recently been released from jail, the chief said.
