A University of Georgia faculty member has died after being hit while riding her bicycle.
Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson tells news outlets that a pickup truck hit 45-year-old Karen Tinsley from behind Tuesday night in Oconee County, killing the avid cyclist.
The university says Tinsley had recently been promoted in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences department of financial planning, housing and consumer economics
In a statement, FHCE department head Sheri Worthy said Tinsley was “admired across the state for her tireless efforts toward improving housing conditions in Georgia.” The university says Tinsley was born in Augusta and grew up in Syracuse, New York.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports that charges are pending against the driver, 55-year-old Richard Poulnott of Watkinsville. It is unclear whether he has an attorney.
