Carbondale, IL : Sesser man injured in I-64 crash on Tuesday, February 21st 2017
A Sesser man suffered minor injuries after Tuesday night crash in Washington County, according to Illinois State Police, District 13.
At about 10:38 p.m., a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Edward C. Verner, 83, of Sesser was traveling eastbound in the right lane of Interstate 64 at milepost 57. A 2011 Chevrolet Impala driven by Morgan Gibson, 21, of Glen Carbon, struck Verner's vehicle in the rear, causing the Caravan to go off the right side of the roadway and through the interstate fence, stopping in a field. Gibson's vehicle exited the roadway to the left, traveled through the median, and came to a rest in the westbound lanes.
Gibson's vehicle caught fire. The westbound lanes of the interstate were completely closed for about 45 minutes.
Verner was taken to Washington County Hospital. Gibson was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol.
