ROGERSVILLE, TN : Charges pending after two flown from wreck near Rogersville on Monday, 19th March 2018
The two occupants of a pickup that was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Route 70-N Monday afternoon north of Rogersville were flown via Wings Air Rescue to Holston Valley Medical Center. The wreck occurred around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon about 200 feet north of the Perry Smith Lane intersection.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol preliminary report, charges are pending against the driver, Phillip Manis, 51,of Rogersville.
The passenger was identified as George Atkins, 60, of Rogersville.
There was no information available about the condition of either man.
Witnesses reportedly told rescuers on the scene that the pickup was traveling south on Route 70-N heading toward Rogersville when it apparently crossed the center line, almost causing a head-on collision with a northbound vehicle.
According to the THP report, the pickup exited the right side of the roadway, hit two mail boxes, entered a ditch, struck a bush, and then continued on and struck a tree where it came to rest.
Rescuers were initially hesitant to begin extricating the two occupants of the pickup because there was a pit bull in the cab as well, which was afraid and acting aggressively.
A passer-by reportedly had a leash that one of the occupants of the pickup was able to attach to the dog. The dog was led out of the pickup without incident, and rescuers said the dog wasn't injured.
It took about 45 minutes for the Hawkins County Rescue Squad to extricate both occupants.
Route 70-N was closed for about an hour until the Wings Air Rescue helicopters had taken off with both patients. The road was opened to one lane of traffic only for another hour while the truck was removed.
Among the vehicles halted on that narrow section of Route 70-N for the hour it was closed were two buses full of children who had just been let out of school.
Among the agencies that responded were the Hawkins County Rescue Squad, Striggersville Volunteer Fire Department, Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department, Wings Air Rescue, Hawkins County EMA, HCSO, and Hawkins County EMS.
