Springfield, MA : Officer involved in fatal pedestrian accident identified by Barnstable police on Sunday, May 28, 2017

Police in Barnstable identified the police officer who was driving a cruiser that struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday as Officer David Heise, a two-year member of the department.

Two Barnstable Police cruisers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance on Danvers Way in Hyannis around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to a department news release.

A woman was screaming at the scene, police said.

Heise's cruiser was on Route 28 east with all emergency lights and sirens activated and on. The officer passed through the intersection at Phinney's Lane when another car, also heading east, pulled over to the right so the officer could pass.

"As the cruiser passed by the vehicle, it struck a pedestrian standing in the middle of the road," police said. "Several witnesses gave statements that confirm these facts."

The man was not in a crosswalk, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The pedestrian died at the scene. Police have not released the man's name.

Heise was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and then to Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released.

State Police are assisting the Barnstable Police Department in the investigation, which will take several weeks to complete, authorities said.
