Palm Beach,FL : Broward psychiatrist charged in Palm Beach County hit-and-run on August, Thursday 3rd 2017
A 38-year-old Coral Springs doctor turned herself in this week after she allegedly fled the scene of a wreck last month on Florida’s Turnpike in Palm Beach County.
Sibyl Simon was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail on Monday on charges of criminal mischief and tampering with evidence. She was released the same day after posting $20,000 bail. Authorities allege that Simon left the scene of a crash near Palm Beach Gardens on the morning of July 17.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Simon works at the Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce. The Florida Health Care Providers website indicates that Simon is certified in adult psychiatry and sleep medicine and has staff privileges at Lawnwood.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said she could not discuss the matter.
According to the FHP report, a man told investigators he and his family were traveling north on the turnpike on a trip to Walt Disney World when a Toyota Prius used the right shoulder to pass near mile marker 109 in Palm Beach Gardens. The Prius hit the right front side of the man’s vehicle and did not stop, the report said.
The man’s wife was able to get a picture of the Prius and its license plate before it left the scene.
A trooper tracked the plate to the Avis car rental company, who reported that Simon had rented the vehicle.
Troopers found the Prius parked at the hospital. It appeared that someone had used spray paint to try to cover up damage to the vehicle, the report said. Troopers contacted Simon by phone, but she declined to speak without talking to an attorney.
She later went to the FHP station at the Fort Pierce Service Plaza to to give a statement. Simon told deputies she drove from home to work, but denied being involved in a collision, the report said.
When asked about damage to the vehicle, Simon reportedly explained that it occurred as she was backing into her garage. Deputies determined that the damage was not consistent with the type of crash that Simon described.
