A 37-year-old Pana man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a crash Sunday night that killed a passenger in his car.
Matthew D. Swisher was arrested on a charge of DUI and cited for improper lane usage. Additional charges are likely to be filed, according to a release from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office identified the man killed in the crash as Kevin G. Thompson, 43, of Pana.
The accident occurred about 8:48 p.m. Sunday near 2180 E. 350 North Road in Pana Township, approximately 2 miles west of Pana.
Swisher was heading westbound when he lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet Impala and went into a plowed field, rolling the vehicle several times. Swisher and Thompson were thrown from the vehicle. Neither man was wearing a seat belt, the sheriff’s office said.
Swisher suffered serious injuries and was taken to Pana Community Hospital and then transferred to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office, Illinois State Police and Christian County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
