VALDOSTA, GA : Lowndes deputy dies in wreck on Sunday, February 26th 2017
A Lowndes County sheriff's deputy died Saturday night from injuries sustained in a collision between his patrol car and a semi-truck, according to the Georgia State Patrol early Sunday morning.
Troopers identified the Lowndes County sheriff's deputy as Michael Butler, 39. Deputy Butler died at South Georgia Medical Center from injuries sustained from the incident at Cat Creek Road and Norman Hall Road.
The semi-truck driver was Robbie J. Register, 29, of Tifton; the GSP did not report injuries for him.
At 8:25 p.m. Saturday, Deputy Butler was responding to a domestic call "with all of his emergency equipment activated (lights and siren)," according to the GSP report. He traveled north on Cat Creek Road.
The semi-truck was traveling east on Norman Hall Road; the truck had stopped for a stop sign and was beginning a right turn off of Norman Hall Road to travel south on Cat Creek, according to the report.
"The front of the semi crossed the center line of Cat Creek Road into the path of the patrol car," according to the GSP Post 31 report. "The patrol car struck the semi on the right front with its front end. After impact, the patrol car rotated counter-clockwise coming to a final uncontrolled rest facing west partially in the northbound lane of Cat Creek Road and the east shoulder. The semi remained in the roadway of Cat Creek road facing east."
The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continued investigating the wreck Sunday morning. No charges have been filed pending completion of a final report, according to the GSP.
