Reading, PA : Man injured in Route 222 crash in Wyomissing on Sunday, February 19, 2017

A Luzerne County man was injured when his SUV hit the concrete median barrier of Route 222 near the State Hill Road exit in Wyomissing, borough police said.

Zachary Perez, 29, of Plymouth was taken to Reading Hospital after the crash about 7:10 p.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes just after the merge with Route 422, police said.

The crash caused traffic backups of more than a mile on northbound Route 222 and eastbound Route 422 until the scene was cleared shortly before 9 p.m.

Perez was in critical condition Monday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Earlier in the day, he had been listed in good condition.

According to police:

Perez was northbound near the merge point when he apparently lost control of his vehicle. The SUV veered sharply left and crashed into the median, sending a 4-foot section of barrier into the oncoming lane.

The SUV flipped onto its side. Firefighters from the Spring Township and Wyomissing fire departments freed Perez from the vehicle.

Another vehicle was involved in a related crash. A car driven by Ankur Kapadia, 31, of South Amboy, N.J., was damaged when it struck crash debris from the first crash. The direction of travel of Kapadia, who wasn’t injured, wasn’t available.
