Ann Arbor, MI : One man killed and another seriously injured in a crash on M-14 in Salem Township on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2015

One man was killed and another seriously injured in a crash on M-14 where a vehicle was cut in half during the collision, officials said.

The two men were in one vehicle and a mother and her daughter were in the other vehicle, according to Salem Township Fire Chief Jim Rachwal.

Officials did not initially want to release which party was in which vehicle because the crash remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.

The vehicles were headed in opposite directions on M-14 around 4 p.m. when the vehicle headed east crossed over the median and smashed into the vehicle headed west, according to Rachwal.

The man who died was described as being in his 20s, officials said. Joyce Williams with Huron Valley Ambulance said he was pinned in his vehicle when rescuers arrived.

The man in the car with him was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The woman and her child were also taken to the hospital.

The crash initially shut down the freeway in both directions. Eastbound M-14 was reopened around 6:05 p.m., according to MDOT.

Rachwal said the entire freeway wouldn't be open yet until about 7 or 8 p.m. while MSP investigates.
