MANCHESTER, MD : Three injured, One in critical condition after van crashon April, Saturday 15th 2017
Police say a 23-year-old Maryland resident is in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center after a two-vehicle crash Saturday that also caused non life-threatening injuries to two other people.Micael Borges Da Silva Castro wasn't wearing his seatbelt when the 2004 Chevy Express van he was driving was struck shortly after 4 p.m. by a Dodge Ram pickup at the intersection of Coolidge and New York avenues, according to a statement from the Manchester Police Department.
Police said investigators later determined the Castro had failed to stop at a stop sign as the van traveled eastbound into the intersection, where the pickup -- driven by Kenneth Work, 51, of the Whiting section of the township -- had the right of way.
Police said the van overturned twice, and Castro was ejected. His passengers, Hysla Santos, 21, of Newark, and Luiz Ribciro, 20, of Elizabeth, are both believed to have been wearing their seatbelts, and sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.
Authorities said Whiting and his front-seat passenger, Michelle Work, 58, were both wearing their seatbelts and were not injured in the crash.
Castro was transported by helicopter to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon. Santos and Ribciro were also taken to the hospital for evaluation of their injuries and then released, according to police.
Police said Berkeley hazmat personnel were dispatched to the scene as a precaution because of commercial cleaning chemicals in the van. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Crime Scene Investigation Unit also assisted at the scene, along with the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Quality Medical Transport and MONOC Paremedics.
The crash is still under investigation by the police department's Traffic Safety Unit, authorities said.
