San Pablo ,CA : One Driver killed and Good Samaritan injured in Single Car Crash after hit by Car along Interstate 80 on Sunday Morning ,April 5th 2015
A man was killed in a solo car crash Sunday morning on Interstate 80, and a good Samaritan trying to help him was severely injured when hit by another car, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A total of three collisions happened in the same area, snarling traffic for more than two hours.
The second and third crash might have been prevented if motorists had paid more attention to the road rather than checking out the crash sites, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld wrote in an email.
The fatal crash occurred about 5:50 a.m. when a man driving a 2000 Honda Accord westbound on I-80 veered into a pillar for a freeway over crossing at San Pablo Dam Road.
It's not known why the driver veered into the pillar, the CHP said in a written release.
The Honda caught fire. Another freeway driver pulled in front of the burning vehicle and tried to put out the flames with his fire extinguisher. The good Samaritan -- a 36-year-old San Pablo man -- was struck and injured by another car.
The man was taken to John Muir Medical Center, where he is being treated for severe injuries but is expected to survive, the CHP said.
In the third crash, the driver of a Chevy Malibu slowed to observe the fatal collision site and was struck from behind by another vehicle. No one was injured, but the crash aggravated the traffic snarl that lasted for more than two hours.
All lanes were reopened by 8 a.m., the CHP said.
