Westmoreland, NY : 17-year-old boy died in a one-car crash in the town of Westmoreland on Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Staff and students at a central New York school are mourning the death of a 17-year-old boy who died this week in a one-car crash.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says William Coleman of Clinton was driving on a road in the town of Westmoreland around 8:45 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a ditch, tree and concrete culvert before the car overturned.

The cause of the crash is being investigated but police say excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash.

Coleman was a senior at Clinton High School who planned to attend Mohawk Valley Community College in the fall.

School district officials say counselors will be available to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.
