A 73-year-old man died after two cars collided head-on Tuesday morning.
At 8:37 a.m. officers were dispatched to the 6400 block of Sunnyside Road SE. The drivers were stuck inside the cars, said Lt. Dave Okada, with the Salem Police Department.
Salem Fire Department was called to extricate them.
The investigation determined that Daniel J. Thompson, 44, was driving a green 1991 Subaru Legacy southbound on Sunnyside Road when the car crossed over the center line and collided with a red 1990 Ford Tempo driven by Michael Tuel.
Both drivers were taken to Salem Hospital. Tuel died of injuries from the crash, Okada said.
Sunnyside Road was closed for almost four hours as officers investigated the crash. No arrests were made and and no citations have been issued. The investigation is ongoing.
