Austin, TX : Three people and dog died in a head-on crash in Hays County on Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Three people and a dog died in a head-on crash in Hays County that shut down Ranch Road 12 for several hours midday Tuesday.

The Department of Public Safety said the crash happened around two miles south of Hugo Road around 11 a.m. Tuesday. A brown Dodge pickup driving eastbound toward San Marcos attempted to pass in a no-passing zone and crossed the double yellow line. The Dodge crashed into a Toyota Camry traveling westbound toward Wimberley.

The driver and passenger in the Camry, described by authorities as an elderly couple, died at the scene. The driver of the Dodge also died at the scene.

Three other people in the Dodge, including a teenager, were taken to area hospitals and their conditions are not known as of Tuesday evening. One of the people transported was taken by STAR Flight.

As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, DPS has not released the names of those who were killed in the crash.
