Anchorage,AK : Toddler fatally struck by SUV in Eagle River driveway accident on October, Sunday 15th 2017
An 18-month-old boy was struck and killed on Sunday afternoon by an SUV driven by his father as he pulled out of an Eagle River driveway, according to Anchorage police.
The child appears to have darted in front of the 2008 Ford Expedition before the father had time to react, said police spokesman MJ Thim.
"This is a horrible situation. It's a tragedy for this family. They are grieving immensely about this and are just trying to comprehend what happened," Thim said.
The boy was not unattended, Thim said, adding that the family was working in the garage and the father needed to move the SUV.
After the collision, the father — whom police didn't name — got out and dialed 911, police said in a statement. Authorities think the crash was accidental and the driver hasn't been charged with a crime, Thim said.
The child, who also was not named by police, was pronounced dead at the scene, said police, who were notified of the accident at 12:37 p.m.
Authorities impounded the SUV, and the death remains under investigation, police said. Thim said city chaplains were called to the scene to assist the family.
The death came less than a week after another Anchorage boy, 4-year-old Carlito Allen Ramos, was accidentally struck and killed by an SUV driven by a neighbor, police said.
