Fort Myers, FL : An Iowa woman was killed and two others critically injured when their car burst into flames at Summerlin Road On Monday, May 16th, 2016
An Iowa woman was killed and two others critically injured when their car burst into flames as part of a seven-car pileup on Summerlin Road on Monday.
Lt. Greg Bueno of the Florida Highway Patrol said four cars, two vans and a tractor-trailer were involved in the crash in the northbound lanes of Summerlin near Winkler Road.
Killed was Kristin Lee, 38. The injured were James Cwanek, 70, of Fort Myers, listed as the driver of a 1998 Lincoln Town Car, and Austin Perkins, 34, of Minnesota. Both men were later taken to Tampa General Hospital, which hosts a regional
burn center, and are listed in critical condition.
Seriously hurt were Brian Crump, 27, of Fort Myers, driving a 2016 Toyota Camry, Nadine Saint-Vil, 25, of Lehigh Acres, a passenger in his car, and Robert Ingalls, 84, the driver of a 2005 Honda Odyssey.
Four others suffered minor injuries.
The FHP said that the seven vehicles were northbound on Summerlin in the process of slowing for traffic congestion. The semi-trailer truck rear-ended the Town Car and that crash started a chain-reaction crash.
Cwanek's car burst into flames after the impact of the crash. Lee was a passenger in the rear of Cwanek's car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
An improper lane change may have sparked the pileup, according to the initial investigation.
A portion of Summerlin was closed from shortly before 4 p.m. and reopened at 9:25 p.m.
The FHP said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
