Lansing, MI : Breckenridge teen dies in car vs. bike crash on Monday, November, 20th 2017
Dark clothing and a lack of bicycle lights may have contributed to a collision with a car Monday night that killed a Gratiot County cyclist.
Keaton Cooley, 19, of Breckenridge, was riding the middle of the southbound lane of McClelland near Adams in Wheeler Township at around 8:15 p.m. wearing dark clothing, said Gratiot County Sheriff Doug Wright.
Sharon Schall, 65, of Breckenridge was driving in the same direction and struck the unlit bicycle from behind; the 19-year-old was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, Wright said.
The driver of the car was wearing a seat belt and was taken to Mid Michigan Medical Center Gratiot with minor injuries, Wright said.
It appears that dark clothes, the lack of lights on a dark night and riding in the center of the lane all may have contributed to the accident, Wright said.
Alcohol does not appear to be factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.
The Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by State Police, Breckenridge Fire and Mobile Medical Response.
