Two people are hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash in Highland City, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
It happened at around 8:37 p.m. Sunday on Boy Scout Ranch Road, east of Black Walnut Drive, PCSO spokesman Brian Bruchey said in a news release Monday.Brian Denmark, 21, of Lakeland, was driving a white 2012 Ford Fusion eastbound on Boy Scout Ranch Road when the vehicle’s passenger-side tire left the roadway — striking a mailbox, a chain-link fence and a tree, Bruchey said.
Denmark and his passenger, Phillip Smith, 21, of Highland City, were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, Bruchey said. They were transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.
Denmark was said to be in critical condition, while Smith’s condition was described as stable, Bruchey said.
The PCSO is still working to determine what caused the crash, and the investigation is ongoing, he said.
The road was closed for about four hours.
