DURHAM, NC : 2 killed, 8 injured in wrong-way crash on I-85 NB in Durham on Monday, March 20th 2017
Two people were killed and eight others were injured – including three children – in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 85 northbound Monday morning, Durham police said.
Police responded to a reported crash between a car and a SUV just before 12:15 a.m. on I-85 near East Club Boulevard (exit 179).
Once on scene, officers found two people dead as a result of the crash, police said.
According to authorities, a female driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata was heading the wrong direction on I-85 when she slammed her car into a 2017 Ford Expedition. Two people – the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash – were killed instantly, police said.
A female passenger from the Expedition is in critical condition.Police identified the driver of the Expedition as Jerry Alamo, 29, of Central Falls, Rhode Island. The woman critically injured was one of eight passengers in the SUV. She has been identified as Glenda Alamo, 36, also of Central Falls, Rhode Island.
The driver of the Hyundai was Aretha Lynette Chavis, 49, of Durham, police said Monday afternoon.Seven other passengers in the Expedition were taken to the hospital for treatment. The ages of those transported are 4, 10, 11, 16, 21, 22 and 32, police said.
There were no passengers in the Sonata.
The northbound lanes of I-85 were completely shut down for approximately five hours following the wreck.
The crash is under investigation.
