Eustis, FL : Chase Fenbers, 19, and Elizabeth Yasko, 16, died in a head-on crash on State Road 44 in Lake County on Wednesday, June 17, 2015
Two teenagers who were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision on State Road 44 in Eustis were identified today by the Florida Highway Patrol as Chase Fenbers, 19, the driver, and Elizabeth Yasko, 16, his passenger.
It happened just before 6 p.m. on S.R. 44 near Sorrento Springs Drive, troopers said.
Fenbers, of Leesburg, was driving a 2007 Honda west on S.R. 44 when he tried to pass a line of vehicles in front of him, entering the eastbound lanes. The pass was illegal because there was a double yellow line, troopers said.
He traveled into the direct path of a van, which was going east. They collided head-on.
The driver of the van, Christopher Digilio, 42, of Oviedo, was not seriously injured, FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.
Fenbers was pronounced dead at the scene, while Elizabeth, of Fruitland Park, died at the hospital, Montes said.
A blood-alcohol content test is pending for Fenbers, Montes said. He was wearing seat belt, while Elizabeth was not, Montes said.
Montes said Digilio saw the Honda heading toward him and tried to veer out of the way but didn't have room to avoid the collision.
"The van driver had nowhere to go," she said. "It's just a two-lane road out there."
The road was closed but has since reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
