WINTER HAVEN, FL : Winter Haven woman dies early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday, 25th September 2016
A 23-year-old Winter Haven woman died following a single-car crash early Sunday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office reported.
Morgan E. Nason of Diamond Road Southwest was driving west on Winter Lake Road in a 2008 Nissan Altima about 1:35 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office reported, when the vehicle apparently drifted from the inside lane and into the grass median, about one-quarter mile east of Spirit Lake Road.
Nason apparently overcorrected the vehicle's direction, the Sheriff’s Office reported, and the vehicle began to rotate clockwise as it moved southwest.
The Nissan crossed three westbound lanes of traffic and left the south side of the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Sheriff’s report. The speed limit on Winter Lake Road drops from 60 mph to 50 mph in the area of the crash.
Polk County Fire Rescue and medical units had to cut Nason from her vehicle. She was transported to Winter Haven Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Nason was wearing a seatbelt, which had to be cut off during extrication, the report said. Both the front and side airbags deployed as a result of the crash, the report said.
The Sheriff’s Office said neither impairment nor excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. The office is investigating the possibility of distracted driving.
There is no evidence to suggest any other vehicles were involved in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Westbound lanes of Winter Lake Road were closed for approximately four hours during the investigation.
