Des Moines, IA : Teenage girl killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 78 in Keokuk County on Saturday night, March 7, 2015
A 17-year-old girl was killed in a car accident in Keokuk County late Saturday, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The accident occurred when a vehicle driving northbound ran a stop sign and collided with a westbound vehicle at the intersection of Highway 78 and 270th Avenue, said Sgt. Nathan Ludwig, Iowa State Patrol spokesman.
The driver of the westbound vehicle, Bethanne Cooksey, of Hedrick, died in the crash.
The Iowa State Patrol initially reported two people died in the crash. This error was because of a mix-up with one of the victims' names at the hospital, Ludwig said. He said a trooper had checked the names with the hospital, and the hospital said it didn't have one of the victims. This led the trooper to believe that person had died.
The Iowa State Patrol later learned of the name mix-up and learned the person survived. A second person in the northbound vehicle was seriously injured and flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals.
Both victims are in serious condition.
The names of the other two people in the crash are being withheld pending the family notification.
The crash is still under investigation.
