A motorist fell asleep at the wheel, veered off Main Street and struck the utility pole in the southbound lane in front of Bonanza Steakhouse on Sunday evening.
First responders got the call at 5:37 p.m. and responded to the scene to find Katarina Horr, 23, of North Berwick, standing outside of her vehicle, a black Chevrolet sedan.
Horr had fallen asleep while driving, according to Deputy Chief Timothy Strout, of the Sanford Police Department. She complained of head and neck pain and was brought to Southern Maine Health Care’s campus in Sanford for treatment. Her vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage.
The car’s airbags deployed. Horr was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The pole snapped at a point about ten feet above ground, said Capt. Brian Smith, of the Sanford Fire Department. The wires to which it was attached prevented it from completely falling to the ground.
The fire department’s Engine 3 and Rescue 3 responded to the scene. Police blocked off the scene, directing traffic around the southbound stretch where the accident occurred.
