A mother and her 10-year-old daughter died in a car wreck Saturday that also injured several others.
Makala Martin, 10, was a passenger in the left rear seat of a vehicle driven by her mother, 35-year-old Brandy Ramsey Helms. Both were killed when a car ran a stop sign and struck their vehicle, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Neither were wearing seat belts, according to the Highway Patrol.
Both Martin and Helms lived at the same address on Grace Street in Kings Mountain.
“She was a smart and imaginative young girl,” Ricky Ramsey Jr. said of his niece. “She liked to draw and put stuff together. She was an active girl.”
Ramsey said Makala liked to play with Barbie dolls, but he enjoyed teaching her how to shoot a BB gun and fire a slingshot, too.
He and his sister, Brandy Helms, grew up in Kings Mountain. She also had a teenage daughter.
“She liked taking Makala to the park and playing,” Ramsey said. “She just liked being outdoors.”
The two-car collision occurred around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of South Battleground Avenue and Bethlehem Road.
Helms was driving eastbound on South Battleground Avenue when another vehicle on Bethlehem Road ran a stop sign and struck the vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol. Information on the driver of the other vehicle was not immediately available.
There were other injuries in the wreck, but the extent of their injuries or what vehicle they were in was not immediately available.
A portion of both South Battleground Avenue and Bethlehem Road were closed as the investigation took place.
