A Good Samaritan died, a motorcyclist was injured, and a suspected wrong-way driver is accused of plowing into three cars in string of crashes on U.S. 19 in Pasco County on Sunday night.
The crashes happened over a two-hour time span on U.S. 19 in Holiday.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators say it all began at about 7:42 p.m.
They say a Pinellas Park woman had a blood alcohol level of .177, more than twice the legal limit, when she crashed into three vehicles while driving the wrong way on U.S. 19.
Brittany Alyssa Anello, 24, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 19 when she hit two vehicles. An FHP crash report says she continued on a short distance and hit a third vehicle.
The crashes happened north of Pappas Road, just south of where Alt. 19 meets U.S. 19. A passenger in one of the vehicles was injured and transported to Trinity Hospital.
After the crashes, a tow truck responded to the scene to remove cars that were damaged in the wrong-way driver crashes.
Around the same time, a motorcyclist was driving northbound on U.S. 19, lost control and was ejected from his bike.
Denise E. Gajus, 66, who is the wife of the tow truck driver responding to the wrong-way crash, walked across U.S. 19 to help the injured motorcyclist.
Gajus walked into the path of a Toyota 4 Runner that was driving southbound on U.S. 19 and was hit. She suffered fatal injuries. This accident happened at about 9:08 p.m.
The driver of the motorcycle, Mark Vincent Berry, 26, of Homosassa, was airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point for treatment of injuries suffered when he lost control of his bike.
Brittany Alyssa Anello, 24, is charged with DUI, four counts of DUI damage to property or person, driving on the wrong side of a divided highway and failure to provide proof of insurance.
