THE VILLAGES, FL : Four injured in Villages shopping plaza crash at the Southern Trace Plaza at 3475 Wedgewood Lane on Monday, 2nd March, 2020

Four people were seriously injured Monday when a driver suffering a medical episode crashed into another vehicle and a storefront in the Southern Trace Plaza, authorities say.

A 55-year old Oxford resident was traveling eastbound through the parking lot of the Southern Trace Plaza at 3475 Wedgewood Lane around 4:25 p.m. when he suddenly lost control of his vehicle due to an unspecified medical emergency, according to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report.

The man reportedly veered onto the sidewalk in front of Publix, hit several plants, another car and one pedestrian, then came to a stop after colliding with a pillar in front of Salon Jaylee, knocking out the lower half completely.

Debris from the plants and the pillar struck two other pedestrians, and all three — a 13-year-old boy from Leesburg, a 67-year-old woman from The Villages and a 72-year-old Pennsylvania woman who was hit directly — were taken to separate hospitals in the region with serious injuries.

The driver, who the Daily Commercial is not identifying due to the nature of the accident, was also seriously injured in the crash. Despite an estimated $2,000 in damage to their vehicle, the driver and passenger of the second vehicle, Wisconsin residents aged 84 and 76, were not injured, the FHP reported.
