DeLand, FL : Man Killed After Stopping In Road To Drink Beer on May 30th 2014

A 57-year-old man was hit and killed by an SUV around 8:37 p.m. Friday after he wandered into oncoming traffic and stopped to drink a beer in Volusia County.

Witnesses said the man, believed to be intoxicated, walked westbound from the Sunoco gas station in a dark area of the roadway and crossed over the concrete median near the 1000 block of North Woodland Boulevard, in DeLand.

The man then walked west into the inside southbound lane, where a witness stated the man stopped in the middle of the lane and began drinking a beer, police said.

A Chevrolet Tahoe being driven by Andre Washington Jr., 20, of South Carolina, struck the man.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.

The man's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

No other information was immediately released.
