Fort Wayne, IN : Woman dies in a car crash in West Jefferson on Wednesday, June 22, 2016

An elderly woman is dead after a car crash on the city's southwest side Wednesday.

Fort Wayne police officers were called to West Jefferson Boulevard and North Glendale Drive, between Time Corners and Jefferson Pointe, about 5 p.m. where they found two passenger vehicles heavily damaged. In one vehicle, two people needed to be extracted by fire personnel.

One of those two, an elderly woman who has not been identified, was pulled from the front passenger seat while unconscious. Rushed to an hospital, she later died, according to Fort Wayne police. The driver of that vehicle refused treatement.

A 17-year-old driving the other vehicle involved - it's sole occupant - also refused medical treatment.

Witnesses told investigators that the vehicle with the elderly woman was travelling east on West Jefferson and attempted to make a left hand turn onto Glendale Drive, where the Medical Spa/Indiana Vein and Laser Center is located as well as DeHayes Group insurance company.

In doing so, the vehicle turned directly into the path of the 17-year-old's vehicle, which was travelling in the westbound lanes of West Jefferson. The 17-year-old's car struck the other vehicle on the passenger side. According to police, it does not appear that impairment played any role in the crash.

The crash slowed traffic in the west lanes of West Jefferson for roughly an hour or more, as investigators cleared the damage from the road and closed off one lane. The crash is under investigation by police, the Allen County coroner's office as well as the Allen County prosecutor's office.

If the coroner rules the woman's death due to the crash, it would be the 16th traffic fatality on county roads this year.
