El Paso, TX : Pedestrian dies after Alameda Avenue collision on Thursday, March 16, 2017

A pedestrian died at a hospital over the weekend after being hit by car Thursday while crossing Alameda Avenue in the Lower Valley, El Paso police officials said Monday.

Juan Quintero Jr., 44, of El Paso, was struck by a Suzuki Forenza in an accident at 7:25 p.m. Thursday in the 8400 block of Alameda Avenue near the Bronco Swap Meet, police said.

Police said that Quintero was not in a crosswalk. The driver of the Suzuki, Juan Vasquez, 55, was heading west on Alameda and did not see Quintero and struck him, police said. Vasquez, also of El Paso, remained at the scene.

On Sunday, the Special Traffic Investigations Unit learned that Quintero, who was taken to Del Sol Medical Center, died of his injuries, officials said. The case is under investigation.

Police officials said that there have been 13 traffic deaths in El Paso this year compared with 17 at this time last year.
