Commerce Township, MI : Woman killed in crash with suspected drunk driver in Commerce on Monday evening, January 26, 2015
A 44-year-old Milford woman is dead after authorities said she was rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver Monday evening on Pontiac Trail in Commerce Township.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, who worked as a delivery driver for Pizza Hut, was on Pontiac Trail near Addington Drive when her 1997 GMC Jimmy was hit by a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse.
The Jimmy rolled over and burst into flames, investigators said.
The victim’s name has not yet been released.
"Unfortunately, the victim died a horrible death of smoke inhalation and thermal burns, so she basically burned to death," said Undersheriff Mike McCabe.
Because the body was so severely burned the medical examiner has not made a positive identification yet.
The Traverse was being driven by a 41-year-old Farmington Hills man. He was taken to a hospital before being transferred to the Oakland County Jail, where he is being held without bond pending charges.
Investigators said they are awaiting results of a blood test from the man, but that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
"It's beyond belief what has happened. The other driver had obviously been drinking. There are definite proofs of alcohol intoxication. I can tell you preliminarily that the alcohol level is way above the legal limit," said McCabe.
