Jacksonville, FL : Bicyclist died after being hit by a car near the entrance to the FSCJ Kent campus on Monday night, February 22, 2016

A Jacksonville woman is dead after she was hit by a car while riding her bicycle.

That crash happened Monday night along Roosevelt Boulevard near the entrance to the FSCJ Kent campus. Neighbors said they didn't want to go on camera, but they were clearly emotional when talking about what happened.

Those who knew the victim said they can't believe she's gone.

Police said 33-year-old April Tournay was riding her bike through the heavily traveled intersection when a car traveling south on Roosevelt Boulevard hit Tournay, sending her to the hospital with critical injuries. Hours later she died.

Neighbors said Tournay lived just minutes away from the scene of the crash. They said she was working to get her life back on track and that she was a good person.

"Just driving down the street, you can pull up on a bicycle very quickly, but if they're not having the proper reflective gear, it can be very difficult to see them and you can come up on them very quickly," said News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith.

Smith said an accident like Tournay's can happen in an instant. With more bicyclists sharing the roads with motorists, it's important to be aware, especially after dark.

"Visibility is reduced tremendously for pedestrians and bicyclists, so you really need to have something that's really going to light you up and let drivers know you're there," Smith said.

Police said the driver of the car stopped and cooperated.

The accident is still under investigation to determine if drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
