A 22-year-old woman died and two other people were hurt in a head-on crash near Cornelius Sunday, Jan. 4.

The woman was driving a 1999 Honda Accord south on NW Susbaurer when around noon she collided with a 2006 Mercedes SUV that was trying to pass a car in a no passing zone near the Long Road intersection, according to Washington County Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Dave Thompson.

The woman, later identified as Maria Lara Martinez, 22, of Hillsboro, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV's driver, Adam Buchalski, 63, and his passenger, 51-year-old Paulina Lea, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A grand jury indicted Buchalski on Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 on second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and fourth-degree assault, the sheriff's office said. The assault charge is associated with the injuries his passenger, Lea, received from the crash.

Deputies arrested Buchalski at his home in Cornelius just after noon Friday, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies took him to the Washington County Jail where he is being held on $250,000 bail.
