Irene, SD : 55-year-old man dies when motorcycle crashes into deer on 448th Avenue near 295th Street on Saturday morning, July 9, 2016

A 55-year-old man died and another person was injured when a motorcycle crashed into a deer Saturday morning.

The names of the people involved are being withheld pending notification of family. At 11:47 a.m. Saturday, a 2006 Harley Davison was southbound on 448th Avenue near 295th Street when a deer entered the roadway, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The motorcycle driver tried to avoid the deer, but crashed into the animal. The male driver and the female passenger were thrown from the motorcycle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female passenger suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital by helicopter. Neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet. South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
