Columbus, NE : Driver cited after semi hits poles east of Columbus on Monday morning, September 26, 2016

The driver of a semitrailer was cited for careless driving after a Monday morning accident about a mile east of Columbus.

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, Malcom Xavier Griggs, 26, of Louisiana, was driving a 2016 Freightliner west on U.S. Highway 30 when he reacted to avoid running into another semi stopped at a traffic light. Griggs’ semi left the roadway and entered the north ditch, where it collided with a utility pole and steel pole supporting the traffic lights at the East 29th Avenue intersection.

Griggs, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The trailer he was pulling was empty. The semi, owned by Swift Trucking of Phoenix, sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage. Approximately $20,000 in damage was done to the utility pole and traffic light.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
