Amarillo, TX : Clarito Ortiz, 48, died after a fatal two-vehicle collision on Highway 60 east of Amarillo on Wednesday, March 9, 2016
An Amarillo man is dead after a two-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning on U.S. Highway 60 near Farm-to-Market Road 1912.
About 5:40 a.m., a 2002 Dodge Caravan driven by Clarito Ortiz, 48, of Amarillo, was headed east on Highway 60. A 2003 Chevrolet Venture, driven by Jason Juvenal, 39, of Tulia, was also headed east.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers have not determined how the accident happened, but said the vehicles collided and the Chevrolet was forced into the median and swerved back onto the right shoulder of the highway. The Chevrolet then veered onto the railroad tracks behind a barbed wire fence and caught fire.
The fire from the Chevrolet starged a small grass fire that was quickly extinguished.
The Dodge was forced off the road onto the right shoulder, where it struck a pipe fence and rolled over. Ortiz died at the scene of the wreck, and Juvenal was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Both men were wearing seat belts.
Road conditions were dry, and there were no other vehicles involved. The incident is under investigation.
