BENSON, NC : 1 dead in crash involving 2 tractor-trailers on I-40 on Tuesday, 13th June 2023

One person is dead after a tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 40 on Tuesday — later triggering a second wreck between two tractor-trailers, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The incident involved two separate crashes. One wreck — in which a member of an oversized-load escort team was hit and killed — happened around 8:30 a.m. just west of N.C. 210 at exit 319.

The driver of a tractor-trailer in the deadly crash fled and was stopped by troopers a short time later, according to Sgt. J.A. Gentry of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The tractor-trailer in the deadly pedestrian crash was questioned and will be charged Wednesday, Gentry said. No impairment was suspected in that wreck, which happened while the escort team had stopped at the entrance ramp lane.

During the traffic back-ups, a later crash two miles east of the deadly wreck shut down the westbound lanes in Johnston County for about seven hours.

Eastbound lanes were bumper to bumper.
