Yazoo County, MS : Several people injured in a two-vehicle crash on Mississippi 16 near Highway 49 in Yazoo County on Tuesday, March 31, 2015

A driver fell asleep, causing a crash that injured several people in Yazoo County, state officials said.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 8:15 a.m. on Mississippi 16 near Highway 49, the Mississippi Highway Patrol said.

Charles Sanders, the driver of a gold Pontiac Torrent, fell asleep and crossed over from the westbound lane into the eastbound lane of Highway 16, hitting a blue Hyundai Sonata head-on, MHP said.

Kia Wells, 25, identified by MHP as the driver of the Hyundai, was flown to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in critical condition.

Sanders, 20, was taken to UMMC with a broken leg, MHP said.

Two passengers in the Pontiac, Alfreda Smith, 36, and Dasia Doby, 19, were also injured. Smith, who was sitting in the front seat when the car crashed, was flown to UMMC with major injuries, MHP said. Rear passenger Doby suffered non-life-treatening injuries and was taken to a hospital in Yazoo City.

The crash is under investigation.
