The death of Anita Kurmann, 38, left her colleagues reeling with grief.

"Anita was close to many of us, and the shock and grief we feel at this loss is overwhelming," said Dr. Darrell Kotton, who worked with Kurmann at Boston University's Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Kurmann was an endocrine surgeon who wanted to put her medical training to use in a research lab, working with the laboratories at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston University.

"Anita dedicated her life to her patients and her work, believing that her role as a surgeon scientist could most help those who suffer from thyroid diseases," said Kotton.

Kurmann was killed when the truck, an 18-wheel flatbed, turned at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Beacon Street.

Police said the truck and its driver were both located out of state on Friday. Police said Saturday no charges have been filed, and that the driver called police when he realized investigators were searching for his truck.

"It is unclear whether the driver was aware he struck this bicyclist," said Boston Police Superintendent Bernard O'Rourke.
