Morganton, NC : Two injured after wreck in Morganton on April, Tuesday 11th 2017
Morganton, North Carolina
Two people were injured after a wreck on South Sterling Street in Morganton on Tuesday morning.
Ann Foster, 31, of Morganton was driving south out of downtown Morganton around 9 a.m. when she ran off the right side of the road near the Wash House building on South Sterling Street.
Police believe the wreck was caused due to a medical condition that caused Foster to freeze up at the wheel and accelerate, said Sgt. R. Triplett with Morganton Department of Public Safety.
“She left the road about at the Wash House, went through the billboard sign,” Triplett said.
Foster then collided with the center post of the billboard, which has a 10 to 12 inch diameter, and continued traveling up a hill and went straight up to the train tracks where the vehicle stopped, he said.
Once police were alerted of the wreck, they contacted the railroad system officials to stop any trains that were coming in that direction, he said.
Both Foster and the passenger in the vehicle, James Foster, 32, of Morganton were transported to Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge in Morganton with non-life threatening injuries.
During the wreck, Foster side-swiped another vehicle which resulted in minor damages and the driver was not injured, Triplett said.
Foster was not given any charges by MDPS. The vehicle sustained heavy damages.
“We don’t normally charged people when it is strictly a medical issue like that,” Triplett said.
An inspector from Norfolk Southern Railway came out to the scene to assess the damage to the train tracks. No damage was found, Triplett said.
“They are really lucky to be alive,” he said.
Responding agencies along with MDPS were Burke County EMS, Burke County Rescue Squad and Norfolk Southern Railway.
