During his five years in the U.S. Navy, Ian Bernhard was one of only a handful of crew members on each C-130 Hercules plane he served aboard, his father recalled Thursday.He was the loadmaster, in charge of balancing cargo throughout the fuselage, Ralph Bernhard said outside his Bethlehem Township home after returning with his wife, Susan, from the cemetery as they prepared to bury their 35-year-old son.
Ralph Bernhard recalled visiting the now-shuttered Naval Air Station Brunswick in Maine, where Ian was based, and meeting with those who flew with him.If anybody's in charge of my plane, I want it to be Ian Bernhard,'" Ralph Bernhard remembered being told.Ian Bernhard was a classic man, masculine and a straight-shooter, his father recalled: "He was great."
He was killed riding his motorcycle in a crash at 6:27 p.m. Tuesday on Center Valley Parkway in Upper Saucon Township, according to township police. He was westbound when an eastbound pickup truck turned left onto West Saucon Valley Circle, into the Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley, and the vehicles collided, police said Thursday.
