Rochester, MN : A motorcyclist was severely injured from a collision on Thursday, August 1, 2017

A motorcyclist was severely injured from a collision with a car early Thursday morning.

The incident happened near 32nd Avenue Northwest and Valleyhigh Drive. From the preliminary details gathered on scene, the man driving the motorcycle — who was described as possibly in his twenties — was traveling at high speeds while northbound on Valleyhigh Drive, according to Capt. Ross Baker of the Rochester Fire Department.

Authorities believe a car that was attempting to turn left onto Valleyhigh Drive collided with the motorcycle. The impact sent the motorcyclist skidding onto the road. His vehicle was found in a ditch nearby.

The Rochester Police and Fire departments were on scene, while a few officers were redirecting commuters. Debris from the crash was scattered around the area, including the shoes the motorcyclist wore, knocked off during the crash.

"He's lucky to be alive," Baker said. "He had his helmet on."

The man was described as being "conscious" when help arrived and was transported by Gold Cross to Mayo Clinic Hospital–Saint Marys.
