Memphis, TN : Man charged with DUI after crashing SUV into utility pole in North Memphis on Monday morning, April 27, 2015
A Memphis man is charged with DUI after crashing his SUV into a utility pole, which knocked out power in North Memphis early Monday morning.
The crash happened in front of Greater Community Temple at Chelsea Avenue and N. Dunlap Street a little before midnight.
When police arrived on the scene, they saw several power and phone lines down. A Dodge Durango was in the grass with its passenger side airbag deployed and a bent steering wheel.
Officers saw a man stumble out of the driver's side door with blood on his head. They also noticed a strong smell of alcohol on the man. He was identified as 36-year-old Lamario Wright.
Wright was taken into custody and charged with DUI, driving on a suspended license, violation of vehicle registration, financial responsibility, and reckless driving.
Chelsea Avenue was shut down Monday morning while MLGW and BellSouth crews repaired the downed lines and replaced a pole.
Crews reopened the road around 6:30 a.m.
