Waldo , FL : One woman Killed One man Critically injured after morning car crash with a tractor-trailer on Monday , June 1st 2015
A Jacksonville man remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after he was involved in a Monday morning car crash with a tractor-trailer in Waldo that killed a Tampa woman.
Stanley Cherichel, 21, was behind the wheel of a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta that was headed south on U.S. 301 in Waldo when the car veered over a median and into a northbound tractor-trailer. The Volkswagen collided with the side of the trailer and its two rear tires before going into a violent spin. Cherichel’s front seat passenger, Soyla Ortiz-Cabrera, 21, of Tampa, was pronounced dead at the scene. Back seat passenger Gilbert Madrigal, 23 and also of Jacksonville, was seriously injured, according to information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Cherichel was flown by ShandsCair medical helicopter to UF Health Shands Hospital, where he remained Tuesday afternoon in critical condition. Madrigal also was taken to Shands and listed as stable, according to Sgt. Tracy Hisler-Pace, an FHP spokeswoman.
The crash, which occurred at 10:26 a.m., brought northbound traffic to a halt on the busy highway for hours. Troopers at the scene had said investigators believed the Volkswagen was traveling faster than the 55 mph speed limit when the crash occurred.
