PROVIDENCE, RI : 5 hospitalized following 6-car crash in Providence on Sunday, 5th May 2019
Less than 12 hours after a fatal accident elsewhere on Elmwood Avenue early Sunday, three people were seriously injured in a crash involving eight vehicles, five of them unattended, and a building.
After the afternoon crash, Elmwood Avenue was closed about five hours Sunday near Longfellow Street.
Providence police said in a news release on Sunday night that a red Acura and a gray BMW hit each other as they both traveled south on Elmwood (Route 1) at about 2 p.m. The Acura veered to the right and spun clockwise until it slammed into the rear of a white Toyota van parked at the curb in front of 799 Elmwood.
The force propelled the unoccupied van forward into the back of an unoccupied blue Subaru Tribeca parked in front of it. The Acura, meanwhile, crossed Longfellow, jumped the curb and struck an exterior wall of 801 Elmwood.
The BMW veered to its left and hit the median in the center of Elmwood, becoming airborne and colliding head-on with a northbound white Nissan Pathfinder. The Nissan rolled over onto its right side and collided with three parked cars, a black Hyundai Santa Fe, a silver Hyundai Sonata and a red Honda Pilot, which were all facing north in front of 800 Elmwood.
The drivers of the Acura and BMW and the Acura’s passenger were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were also taken there with minor injuries, the police said.
