A Winchester resident died Tuesday after a single-vehicle crash in Ascutney, Vt., according to Vermont State Police.
Matthew J. Calder, 31, was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima south in the left lane of Interstate 91, when the car gradually shifted left and hit the guardrail, police said in a news release Tuesday night. The Nissan continued south, into the median, and then down an embankment before stopping in a section of trees, according to police.
Calder died of his injuries at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, Vt., according to the release, which says he had not been wearing a seat belt.
No one else was in the car, State Police Sgt. Mark Perkins said.
State Police responded to the crash, which brought Interstate 91 south in the area down to one lane for several hours, shortly before 3 p.m.
Members of the Ascutney and Springfield, Vt., fire departments assisted at the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Vermont State Police did not respond to requests for comment this morning.
