Frankfort, KY : Nicky Hayden hospitalised with serious head, chest injuries after bicycle crash on May, Wednesday, 17th 2017
NICKY Hayden, 2006 MotoGP World Champion, remains in a very serious condition in hospital after a bicycle accident in Italy.
The 36-year old was reportedly hit by a car while training on his bicycle between Tavoleto and Riccione, south of the seaside resort of Rimini.
Hayden was rushed to a local hospital with severe head and chest injuries, but the severity led to the decision to fly him to the Bufalini hospital in nearby Cesena, one better equipped to cater to serious head injuries.
“The rider is in very serious condition and has now been moved to intensive care,” Dr Senni, chief of the hospital’s press office, told Italian site gpone.com.
His mother Rose and brother and fellow racer Tommy are expected to arrive on Thursday local time.
UPDATE 4:26pm: The latest statement from the hospital reports no change in Hayden’s condition from Wednesday evening.
“Nicky Hayden remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit, the clinical picture remains extremely serious,” the statement, released Thursday at 8:20am local time, said according to corsedimoto.com.
In a twist of fate, superbikeplanet.com reports that the hospital is the same one American MotoGP legend Wayne Rainey was taken after his career-ending accident at nearby Misano in 1993.
Photographs published by local media outlets showed substantial damage to the front windscreen of the car and Hayden’s bicycle, which was snapped in half.
